2 Into the valley of Josaphat I will herd the heathen folk, one and all, and there hold assize over them for the wrong they did to my people, to Israel, my own domain. People of mine they scattered through the world, land of mine they parcelled out between them. 3 Must they be awarded by lot, such captives, and then sold cheap, boy-slave for a harlot’s hire, girl-slave for the draining of a wine-stoup? 4 What, would you chaffer with me, men of Tyre and Sion, men from the pale of Philistia? Must there be barter and exchange between us? Nay, if you will have exchanges with me, look to it that the reward does not fall on your own heads, swift and sudden![1] 5 Would you carry off silver of mine and gold, lay up the choicest of my treasures in yonder temples? 6 Citizens of Jerusalem, men of Juda’s breed, would you sell them to Grecian masters, far away from their home? 7 See if I do not summon them back from exile that was of your contriving, and, for that service done, pay you in your own coin; 8 make over son and daughter of yours to these same men of Juda, slaves they can barter at will to the remote Sabaeans; I, the Lord, have decreed it. 1

Quia ecce in diebus illis, et in tempore illo,
cum convertero captivitatem Juda et Jerusalem,
2
congregabo omnes gentes,
et deducam eas in vallem Josaphat;
et disceptabo cum eis ibi super populo meo,
et hæreditate mea Israël,
quos disperserunt in nationibus,
et terram meam diviserunt.
3
Et super populum meum miserunt sortem;
et posuerunt puerum in prostibulo,
et puellam vendiderunt pro vino ut biberent.
4
Verum quid mihi et vobis, Tyrus et Sidon,
et omnis terminus Palæstinorum?
numquid ultionem vos reddetis mihi?
et si ulciscimini vos contra me,
cito velociter reddam vicissitudinem vobis super caput vestrum.
5
Argentum enim meum et aurum tulistis,
et desiderabilia mea et pulcherrima intulistis in delubra vestra.
6
Et filios Juda et filios Jerusalem vendidistis filiis Græcorum,
ut longe faceretis eos de finibus suis.
7
Ecce ego suscitabo eos de loco in quo vendidistis eos,
et convertam retributionem vestram in caput vestrum.
8
Et vendam filios vestros et filias vestras in manibus filiorum Juda,
et venundabunt eos Sabæis, genti longinquæ,
quia Dominus locutus est.
9 κηρύξατε ταῦτα ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἁγιάσατε πόλεμον ἐξεγείρατε τοὺς μαχητάς προσαγάγετε καὶ ἀναβαίνετε πάντες ἄνδρες πολεμισταί 10 συγκόψατε τὰ ἄροτρα ὑμῶν εἰς ῥομφαίας καὶ τὰ δρέπανα ὑμῶν εἰς σειρομάστας ὁ ἀδύνατος λεγέτω ὅτι ἰσχύω ἐγώ 11 συναθροίζεσθε καὶ εἰσπορεύεσθε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη κυκλόθεν καὶ συνάχθητε ἐκεῖ ὁ πραῢς ἔστω μαχητής 12 ἐξεγειρέσθωσαν καὶ ἀναβαινέτωσαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη εἰς τὴν κοιλάδα Ιωσαφατ διότι ἐκεῖ καθιῶ τοῦ διακρῖναι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη κυκλόθεν 13 ἐξαποστείλατε δρέπανα ὅτι παρέστηκεν τρύγητος εἰσπορεύεσθε πατεῖτε διότι πλήρης ἡ ληνός ὑπερεκχεῖται τὰ ὑπολήνια ὅτι πεπλήθυνται τὰ κακὰ αὐτῶν 9 Cry it to the nations, they should do sacrifice and muster their tried warriors for battle; rally they, march they, all that bear arms. 10 Ploughshare beat into sword, spade into spear; weakling is none but must summon up his manhood now! 11 To arms, to the rendezvous, nations all about; doom of the Lord awaits you, warriors all! 12 Up, up, to Josaphat’s valley betake you; here, upon all neighbouring peoples, I will hold assize. 13 The sickle, there! Harvest is ripe already. Down to the vineyard with you! Are not the vats full, the presses overflowing? Has it not come to a head, the measure of their wickedness? 9
Clamate hoc in gentibus,
sanctificate bellum,
suscitate robustos:
accedant, ascendant omnes viri bellatores.
10
Concidite aratra vestra in gladios,
et ligones vestros in lanceas.
Infirmus dicat: Quia fortis ego sum.
11
Erumpite, et venite, omnes gentes de circuitu,
et congregamini;
ibi occumbere faciet Dominus robustos tuos.
12
Consurgant, et ascendant gentes in vallem Josaphat,
quia ibi sedebo ut judicem omnes gentes in circuitu.
13
Mittite falces, quoniam maturavit messis;
venite, et descendite,
quia plenum est torcular, exuberant torcularia:
quia multiplicata est malitia eorum.
14 ἦχοι ἐξήχησαν ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῆς δίκης ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἡμέρα κυρίου ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῆς δίκης 15 ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη συσκοτάσουσιν καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες δύσουσιν φέγγος αὐτῶν 16 ὁ δὲ κύριος ἐκ Σιων ἀνακεκράξεται καὶ ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ δώσει φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ σεισθήσεται ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ ὁ δὲ κύριος φείσεται τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνισχύσει κύριος τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ 17 καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ὁ κατασκηνῶν ἐν Σιων ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ μου καὶ ἔσται Ιερουσαλημ πόλις ἁγία καὶ ἀλλογενεῖς οὐ διελεύσονται δ{I'} αὐτῆς οὐκέτι 14 Thronging, thronging they come, in yonder valley to try their destiny, appointed trysting-place of a divine audit; 15 dark grow sun and moon, light of the stars is none. 16 Loud as roaring of lion speaks the Lord in thunder from his citadel at Jerusalem, till heaven and earth quake at the sound. To his own people, the sons of Israel, refuge he is and stronghold; 17 doubt you shall have none thenceforward that I, the Lord your God, have my dwelling-place at Jerusalem; a holy city Jerusalem shall be, never again shall alien foe breach the walls of her. 14
Populi, populi, in valle concisionis,
quia juxta est dies Domini in valle concisionis.
15
Sol et luna obtenebrati sunt,
et stellæ retraxerunt splendorem suum.
16
Et Dominus de Sion rugiet,
et de Jerusalem dabit vocem suam,
et movebuntur cæli et terra;
et Dominus spes populi sui,
et fortitudo filiorum Israël.
17
Et scietis quia ego Dominus Deus vester,
habitans in Sion monte sancto meo;
et erit Jerusalem sancta,
et alieni non transibunt per eam amplius.
18 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀποσταλάξει τὰ ὄρη γλυκασμόν καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ ῥυήσονται γάλα καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ἀφέσεις Ιουδα ῥυήσονται ὕδατα καὶ πηγὴ ἐξ οἴκου κυρίου ἐξελεύσεται καὶ ποτιεῖ τὸν χειμάρρουν τῶν σχοίνων 19 Αἴγυπτος εἰς ἀφανισμὸν ἔσται καὶ ἡ Ιδουμαία εἰς πεδίον ἀφανισμοῦ ἔσται ἐξ ἀδικιῶν υἱῶν Ιουδα ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐξέχεαν αἷμα δίκαιον ἐν τῇ γῇ αὐτῶν 20 ἡ δὲ Ιουδαία εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα κατοικηθήσεται καὶ Ιερουσαλημ εἰς γενεὰς γενεῶν 21 καὶ ἐκδικήσω τὸ αἷμα αὐτῶν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀθῳώσω καὶ κύριος κατασκηνώσει ἐν Σιων 18 Drip now with sweet wine the mountain-slopes, bathed in milk the upland pastures; never a stream in all Juda but flows full and strong. What fountain is this that comes out from the Lord’s temple, and waters the dry valley of Setim? 19 A lonely ruin Egypt shall be, and Edom a desert waste; here was great wrong done to Jewry’s people, here unoffending lives were taken. 20 For Juda, for Jerusalem, there shall be peace undisturbed, long as time shall last; 21 for these, guilt of blood that went still unpardoned shall be pardoned now; here, in Sion, the Lord will have his dwelling-place. 18
Et erit in die illa: stillabunt montes dulcedinem,
et colles fluent lacte,
et per omnes rivos Juda ibunt aquæ;
et fons de domo Domini egredietur,
et irrigabit torrentem spinarum.
19
Ægyptus in desolationem erit,
et Idumæa in desertum perditionis,
pro eo quod inique egerint in filios Juda,
et effuderint sanguinem innocentem in terra sua.
20
Et Judæa in æternum habitabitur,
et Jerusalem in generationem et generationem.
21
Et mundabo sanguinem eorum, quem non mundaveram;
et Dominus commorabitur in Sion.
