2 At last Sechenias the son of Jehiel, of Aelam’s clan, said to him, We have offended our God by marrying foreign wives, women of the neighbouring peoples; but is there no hope of pardon for Israel? 3 Come, let us make a covenant with the Lord our God; let us send away these wives, and the children born of them. That is the Lord’s counsel; that is the counsel of all who reverence his commands; let the law be obeyed! 4 With thee, Esdras, the decision rests; count on our obedience; up, and go boldly about thy task. 5 So Esdras rose up, and bound them by an oath, priests, Levites, and common folk, to do their part. 6 Then, leaving the temple fore-court, he betook himself to Johanan’s lodging, that was son of Eliasib; but here too he would neither eat nor drink, so bitterly he grieved over the restored exiles and their faithlessness.
7 καὶ παρήνεγκαν φωνὴν ἐν Ιουδα καὶ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ πᾶσιν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀποικίας τοῦ συναθροισθῆναι εἰς Ιερουσαλημ 8 καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἂν μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τρεῖς ἡμέρας ὡς ἡ βουλὴ τῶν ἀρχόντων καὶ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἀναθεματισθήσεται πᾶσα ἡ ὕπαρξις αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς διασταλήσεται ἀπὸ ἐκκλησίας τῆς ἀποικίας 9 καὶ συνήχθησαν πάντες ἄνδρες Ιουδα καὶ Βενιαμιν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ εἰς τὰς τρεῖς ἡμέρας οὗτος ὁ μὴν ὁ ἔνατος ἐν εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνὸς ἐκάθισεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἐν πλατείᾳ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ ἀπὸ θορύβου αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ χειμῶνος 10 καὶ ἀνέστη Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ὑμεῖς ἠσυνθετήκατε καὶ ἐκαθίσατε γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας τοῦ προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ πλημμέλειαν Ισραηλ 11 καὶ νῦν δότε αἴνεσιν κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν καὶ ποιήσατε τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ διαστάλητε ἀπὸ λαῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν γυναικῶν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων 12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία καὶ εἶπαν μέγα τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς ποιῆσαι 13 ἀλλὰ ὁ λαὸς πολύς καὶ ὁ καιρὸς χειμερινός καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν δύναμις στῆναι ἔξω καὶ τὸ ἔργον οὐκ εἰς ἡμέραν μίαν καὶ οὐκ εἰς δύο ὅτι ἐπληθύναμεν τοῦ ἀδικῆσαι ἐν τῷ ῥήματι τούτῳ 14 στήτωσαν δὴ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἡμῶν τῇ πάσῃ ἐκκλησίᾳ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν πόλεσιν ἡμῶν ὃς ἐκάθισεν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἐλθέτωσαν εἰς καιροὺς ἀπὸ συνταγῶν καὶ με{T'} αὐτῶν πρεσβύτεροι πόλεως καὶ πόλεως καὶ κριταὶ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ὀργὴν θυμοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐξ ἡμῶν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου 15 πλὴν Ιωναθαν υἱὸς Ασαηλ καὶ Ιαζια υἱὸς Θεκουε με{T'} ἐμοῦ περὶ τούτου καὶ Μεσουλαμ καὶ Σαβαθαι ὁ Λευίτης βοηθῶν αὐτοῖς 16 καὶ ἐποίησαν οὕτως υἱοὶ τῆς ἀποικίας καὶ διεστάλησαν Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ ἄνδρες ἄρχοντες πατριῶν τῷ οἴκῳ καὶ πάντες ἐν ὀνόμασιν ὅτι ἐπέστρεψαν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ δεκάτου ἐκζητῆσαι τὸ ῥῆμα 17 καὶ ἐτέλεσαν ἐν πᾶσιν ἀνδράσιν οἳ ἐκάθισαν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἕως ἡμέρας μιᾶς τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ πρώτου 7 And now word went round Juda and Jerusalem, that all those who had returned from captivity must meet together in the city; 8 it had been decreed by the rulers and the elders that any man who did not appear there within three days should be deprived of all his goods and should be cut off from the restored community. 9 Meet together they did, all the men of Juda and Benjamin, within the three days prescribed (that is, on the twentieth day of the ninth month), at Jerusalem. There they sat, a whole people, in the open space before the house of God, their spirits cowed by guilt, and by the rain that was falling. 10 And the priest Esdras rose up and spoke to them. There is guilt among you, he said; by mating with aliens you have made the reckoning against Israel heavier yet. 11 Confess your fault to the Lord God of your fathers, and obey his will; separate yourselves from the peoples that live around you, from the foreign wives you have married. 12 At that, the whole multitude gave a loud cry, At thy bidding it shall be done! 13 Only, because the throng was so great, and it was the rainy season, when there was no standing out of doors, because their task could not be performed in one day or two, so many were the faults thus committed, 14 they would have their rulers go bail for the rest.[1] Then, in each township, those who had married alien wives should meet the elders and judges of it at a fixed time, till at last no faults were left to earn their God’s vengeance. 15 So Jonathan, son of Azahel, and Jaasia, son of Thecue, took charge of this,[2] with two Levites, Mesollam and Sebethai, to help them; 16 and the restored exiles kept their word, and separated themselves. The priest Esdras, with the clan chiefs … family by family and man by man; they began making their enquiries on the first day of the tenth month,[3] 17 and by the first day of the first month all the husbands of foreign wives had passed before them.
